Before you purchase a Portuguese Water Dog, you need to ask yourself one question: Are you ready to be the center of attention whenever you take your dog out anywhere in public, and be prepared to answer the many questions, and hear the same comments over and over again?
"What kind of dog is that? He is darling!! Can I take his picture? Where did you get him? I can't stop looking at him. He should be in the movies!"
People are, simply put, amazed by these dogs. They are rare, but we now have over 7,000 just in the United States.
The Portuguese Water Dog has a very interesting history. He is an old breed preserved through the centuries for his ability to fish in seawater. He was a full mate on fishing boats and it was his job to bring in the nets, carry messages between boats and the shore and to watch for sharks. He also was in charge of guarding the larger boats when the rest of the crew was away. For this he received his share of the fish, just like any other crewmember. He was twice saved from extinction in the last 100 years.
When Portuguese Fishermen developed machinery to bring in nets and radio communication skills, our water dogs were no longer necessary to work on the boats and they began to die out. But as he increased in popularity as people became familiar with just what a wonderful dog he is, he now is finally free from the danger of extinction.
Portuguese Water Dogs are absolutely fascinating dogs. They have independent intelligent minds to go along with beautiful lines and graceful movement. They have a talent for athleticism rarely seen in dogs that are not performing in circuses. Their companionship and bonding qualities are unsurpassed by any other breed. They have both a fiery and very friendly temperament, which shows up in their eagerness and ability to work, play and perform. Many people believe they are the Peter Pan of dogs, never growing up and although passing the annoying puppy behaviors, retaining those that attract and delight us. He shines as a show dog, loves to swim, and is a natural for agility, obedience, water work competition and tracking. He is a big-hearted dog, gives freely to his human companions, and easily becomes a valued member of any family. Portuguese Water Dogs are loyal to their families and get along well with children and other house pets. One of his main roles in any family is the family comedian.
The PWD is a non-shedding breed, and therefore a good dog for people with allergies. His coat is hair, very much like ours, and will grow and grow. He needs to be brushed and groomed often to keep his hair from tangling and matting. Females are generally around 19 inches tall and weigh around 42 pounds, and males can be as large as 23 inches tall  and weigh up to 60 pounds
Sunnybay Kennels specializes in Portuguese Water Dogs and has for ten years. I guess the old adage of, "Once you have a "Porty", you will never go back to any other breed", very much holds true for us. The main thing our dogs are bred for is great temperament and health above all else. They are also beautiful and have sound Confirmation. Most of our dogs go on to be loving pets and valued members of families and many are involved in service work visiting the elderly or sick in hospitals. They are gentle loving souls and bring much happiness to those they touch.
Sunnybay is a family kennel and all our puppies are raised around our four children, giving them lots of exposure to children at an early age.
Our PWD puppies are raised indoors in the midst of our family, and played with and handled from an early age.
